I just finished watching an episode of the documentary series called Unreported World from the UK TV broadcaster Channel 4, called Killing for Peace. It was about the situation on Sri Lanka (I’m adopted from Sri Lanka, so this one does hit on a personal level for me), describing the current state of the conflict between the Sri Lankan government and the rebel group Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), also known as the Tamil Tigers.
Having scrapped the 2002 ceasefire, the two are back into open war, with over 5000 people dead since the hostilities broke out again.
The documentary focuses on abductions, disappearances and murders of civilians, and it makes it painfully obvious that the Sri Lankan government is taking part. Of course the government denies that the military are killing civilians, ummmm OK? And like Sandra Johnson asked the army, how come people are disappearing in areas under your control! Obviously they didn’t answer, what a bunch of morons!
Over 30 countries have classified the Tamil Tigers as a terrorist organization, but you know I think they ought to put the Sri Lankan government right next to the LTTE on that list!
Probably the saddest part of this mess is that war is not gonna solve shit in this conflict, and none of the parties want to admit that, they’re just gonna continue fighting for another 20 years until they’re all dead! And the people that suffer the most are civilians, who have done nothing wrong.
Another thing that gets mentioned in the program, is that the president of Sri Lanka, Mahinda Rajapaksa, has hired three of his brothers for government, and one of them is secretary for defense, all are Sinhalese nationalists and are determined to destroy the Tamil Tigers. That right there positioned them as no better than the LTTE in my mind, because the LTTE is a Tamil nationalist organization, and now the Sri Lankan government is essentially a nationalist organization! These guys aren’t capable of talking, they just wanna kill each other until the last man is dead.
The most ironic thing is that the majority of people on Sri Lanka are Buddhists of the Theravada school, which is the oldest Buddhist school still in existence, and they can’t even freaking adhere to one of the most central aspects of Buddhism: NON-VIOLENCE!
HELLO! Mr. Rajapaksa you are NOT following the teachings of the Buddha!! What the hell is an idiot like this doing being president of a country of 20 million! It just boggles my mind.
To the people of Sri Lanka, Sinhalese and Tamil alike, it deeply saddens me to hear about casualties among you, I hope from the bottom of my heart that a solution to this conflict can be found, you deserve better, may the light of the stars be with you!
Hi.. What you are thinking is correct. But this is the basic for any conflict. You should know the whole story and don’t you find anything wrong about LTTE. You can’t talk like that to a president elected by people of Sri Lanka.
Also why lot of countries have declared LTTE as terrorists ?
Don’t shout like this. Though you are adopted, now you have no trouble. You are asking Sri Lankans to beg to a terrorist leader. Are you telling this to USA regarding Bin Laden ?
Better you mind your business without trying to be a smart parrot.
